To all mothers, Happy Mothers’ Day!
Burma who has been suffering under the junta now faces the after effects of Cyclone Nargis. While the junta remains stubborn and has witheld the handing out of relief packages, the international committee is once again, trying all means to help the victims and carry out relief operations. Now in local news, Bishan is supposed to be the estate with the best ‘fengshui’. If you would like to attain wealth (however tangible), Bishan is the auspicious place to stay! Aljunied has decided to outdo Bishan by attaining material wealth for its constituency by implementing a ‘fine’ system for the dirtiest precincts. Now the black sheep who treats his/her precinct as a personal garbage bin escapes legal prosecution, evades the bright Corrective Work Order vest and drags the rest of the innocent residents into paying for his/her trash. How does this teach the litterbug a lesson or in diplomatic terms, nip the problem in the bud? Who knows, this may give Aljunied greater reason to expand its GRC in the next elections. Perhaps a resident vigilante would have on standby, an ever ready can of Baygon to rain on that selfish litterbug. Phui!
The Straits Times continues to suggest that NTuC is the best place to shop for cheap groceries. Even the neighbourhood Aunty Lucy knows that this is not true. Aunty Lucy may not frequent Cold Storage or The Marketplace, but she knows that the prices between NTuC, Sheng Siong, Giant and Carrefour (even though she has difficulties in pronouncing it) “can fight one”.
In pink and censorship news, MICA/MDA has lifted its ban on Wilde and the film would be released uncut. The 1997 film that tells the story of the barbed wit writer and poet Oscar Wilde. The film’s gala premiere is slated for 13 May on Tuesday. Who can forget Wilde’s famous lines uttered a month before his death? While lying in bed in a hotel room in Paris stripped of his extravagances, he quipped “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or other of us has to go.”
See, even MICA/MDA knows how to audit and rethink its decisions. There is still light at the end of the tunnel.
